It was not always like this. In the 1980s, builders and nurses could afford family-sized homes, there was abundant social housing and long-term security for private renters.

Tracing the last forty years of housing policy, Peter Apps examines this transformation, following a diverse group of Londoners as their fortunes rise and fall across the decades amid the economic forces sweeping through the city. With clear-eyed urgency, he reveals what will happen when a generation of renters retires and climate change brings fire and flood to a city unprepared for extremes.

He also gives us reason to hope, exploring the ways London can transform again: from a market for private profit to a place that once more offers permanence, safety and opportunity for its citizens. A place to call home.

Author bio

Pete Apps is a journalist and author of the Orwell Prize-winning book Show Me The Bodies which covers the build up to the Grenfell Tower fire. He spent 10 years writing at industry magazine Inside Housing and his work has also appeared in The Guardian, The New Statesman, The Times, The Independent and Private Eye. He appeared in the Netflix film Grenfell: Uncovered in 2025.

To make it as easy as possible to reuse or recycle the packaging once your order arrives, everything is packed in recyclable materials which can be recycled in standard council-issued recycling bins. Our void filling packaging is either recyclable cardboard or reused bubble wrap from previous orders.

Shipping, delivery & returns

UK delivery

All orders are sent via Royal Mail’s 48 hour tracked delivery service, with an average delivery time of 2-3 working days. We aim to post orders within seven calendar days from the point of purchase.  

International deliveries

We dispatch all of our overseas orders via Royal Mail’s tracked delivery service with an average delivery timeframe of 2 weeks. All international orders may be subject to duties and taxes which may incur additional costs. Please check your order tracking details, as you may have to collect your order from customs or a post office.

Due to the volatile nature of US import duty charges, we are sadly no longer able to ship to the USA.
